2011 Colloquia Series

Brown University

This series of catered lunchtime discussion colloquia will bring together students, faculty and creative practitioners at Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design and in Providence to consider the critical issues themes of the Urban Cultural Heritage and Creative Practice (UCHCP) research project. The intention will be to create an interdisciplinary community of interest with perspectives on what contemporary cultural heritage is; what is unique, similar, difficult and valuable about cultural heritage work within urban scenarios; how engagements with cultural heritage scenarios can challenge and transform the creative process; and what are the critical insights and practical innovations that arise from incorporating methods and theories of creative practice within urban cultural heritage work.

Occurring on Mondays at 12pm in the Fall 2011 semester, there will be six sessions in total. Each session will address one of the six urban scenarios being considering in the Urban Cultural Heritage & Creative Practice collaborative project: Providence, Dublin, York, Istanbul, Capetown and Hong Kong.

Two sessions will be held by each of the three hosting departments (Archaeology, Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage, and Theatre Arts and Performance Studies). Each session will engage both critical theoretical perspectives on the implications of a role for creative practice within urban cultural heritage work as well as practical case studies.

Two assigned readings will be circulated for each of the session. Participants will be expected to have completed the reading in advance of the colloquium.

Lunch will be provided to all participants by the host departments.

The colloquia series will begin: 26 September at 12pm at the JNBC Seminar Room (357 Benefit Street).

A list of all the colloquia dates and urban scenarios which will be discussed is below.
